Johnny Modesto and the Nashville Parthanon

The Snake Lady

Track · 2:57 · Alt Country · Americana

Genre: Alt Country The Snake Lady is indeed a real person in the Joshua Tree area. Our neighbors got together, as we do annually to talk about issues of concern. Mostly road maintenance. Last year they invited the "Snake Lady" to talk about what she did. To say she made a big impression is an understatement. She brought snakes, talked so fast, and presented her personal style. That style featured cowboy boots and hat, short shorts and abundant skin art. (One time at the dump I saw her wearing pink cowboy boots.) If anyone needed a song, it was the Snake Lady. So I wrote the song. She made quite an impression.

Johnny Modesto grew up moving between the Central Valley towns of Turlock, Bakersfield and Modesto. He once went by Johnny Modest, switching to Modesto when he tried his hand at speedway motorcycle racing and, later, competition barbecue. Cooking Santa Maria-style tri-tips for a caterer sharpened his skills on the grill. Through those years as a journeyman musician, he played bass in a number of wedding bands and took music classes at the junior college.
